The Royal Swedish Opera, Sweden’s prestigious stage for opera and ballet, boasts a rich history dating back to its founding by Gustav III in 1773. The original opera house opened its doors in 1782, and it was here that the king himself was tragically shot during a masquerade ball a decade later. In the late 1800s, the iconic neoclassical-style opera house we know today was erected under Oscar II’s auspices and opened in 1898.
